Answer is 'NO'. The admission process is holistic (emphasizing the importance of the whole and not the individual parts), and takes into consideration your overall personality, academics, work experience and extra curricular activities. If you can convince the committee that you are capable of handling the rigor of the MBA program and can become a good alum, you're in!

Your essays should principally answer the three important questions - What is your post-MBA goal? How does it connect with the experiences thus far? And, how the MBA course from this school would help you achieve the goal.

Once you've found answers to these important questions the essays and interviews are a piece of cake.

Most university websites clearly state - "A high GMAT score does not guarantee you a place, and a low GMAT score does not deny you the admission". There are several other factors - viz. essays, letters of recommendation, academic history, quality and length of work experience, extra-curriculars - play a vital role in the process.

Remember, end of the day, you'll need to be liked by the committee. If that's the case, you are through!!

I don't intend to start a debate, but a good GMAT score, although not a necessity, plays an important role in the admission process. It is one of the factors taken into consideration when the admission decision is made. While a low score doesn't deny the place, it does hurt one's chances. So, if one strongly feels that one can do better, the test should be retaken with better preparation. Retaking the test is also an indication of your strong motivation behind your decision to do the MBA.

I do agree with the last sentence. The admission process is holistic; and it's the overall impression that decides whether you are in or out.

Probably my post gave an impression that am undermining the importance of GMAT....that's not the case...GMAT is a very important factor in deciding one's fate in admission and especially, scholarship.

I meant that a high GMAT is not 'necessary', people make into best of the schools in the world with quite low scores. Hence, if you have a very good profile & sensible essays, and the only patch is a mediocre score, former will take care of the latter.

While a high GMAT doesn't guarantee a place, a mediocre GMAT doesn't gets you automatically rejected unless it's really poor. However, no denying that higher the score, better are your chances!
